But what if things are bad?

2023-12-11

Dear friend,

"Don't let 'perfect' be the enemy of 'good.'"

I want to invite you to some events this week!

I wanted to send this email at the beginning of the day. I had a whole story about Judy and Pearl Harbor to tell with it.

Now, it's 4:54 p.m. and I have a legislative meeting at 6 p.m.

The story will have to wait.

"Don't let 'perfect' be the enemy of 'good.'"

It's advice I give myself a lot. My only question is, what about if things are bad, and even getting to good seems really far off?

Would I advise someone, "Don't let 'good' be the enemy of 'mediocre'"?

Doesn't have the same ring.

Anyway, I mention it because I've been hearing from a lot of my friends and neighbors how they're struggling right now, and how a lot of aspects of our state and our nation simply don't seem to be working.

I hate hearing this, but your stories are important to me. By hearing specific instances of what's not working in Vermont, I'm better able to look for solutions that are suited not only to the problem but also the system that created the problem.

In the coming session, faced with crises on multiple fronts, our Legislature will be offered temporary solutions and more system-wide ideas. I will favor the latter. Don't let a temporary solution become a permanent problem.

Oliver agrees -- Don't let a temporary solution become a permanent problem.

How are you doing? I'd love to hear your story. Come on by one of the following events this week:

Public Safety Office Hours

What are your thoughts on public safety in Vermont today? Rep. Roberts will be joined by Windham County Sheriff Mark Anderson to take questions on anything on your mind (asking what a County Sheriff does is always a good start).

--> Sat., Dec. 16th, 10–11 a.m. - Halifax Cafe, Halifax Community Hall, 20 Brook Rd, Halifax

Grid Resilience Office Hours

You might have seen the news about Green Mountain Power’s commitment to get to zero outages by 2030. Come talk with GMP representatives to learn how they plan to accomplish that and what it means for reliability and resiliency in our communities now and in the future.

Rep. Roberts will join residents in asking questions, and also take questions and comments on the grid, the Renewable Energy Standard (RES), and anything else you want to talk about.

--> Thurs., Dec. 14th, 10:30–11:30 a.m. Halifax Cafe, Halifax Community Hall, 20 Brook Rd, Halifax

--> Thurs., Dec. 14th, 12–1 p.m., tabling during Senior Meal at Whitingham Municipal Center, 2948 VT Route 100 Jacksonville, VT

Also

--> with Deerfield Valley Chamber of Commerce, I'm organizing a legislative breakfast especially for Chamber members and anyone in the business community. Location pending, but mark your calendar for Monday, January 8th. 8-9:30 a.m. in Wilmington.

If you're in Windham County this week, come on by one of these, or hit me up and I'll swing by!

Either way, I appreciate every brief or long email to let me know how you're doing.

warm regards,

P.S. How about -- take a second and write me 1) who you want for U.S. President in 2024 (from among who's in the running), and 2) who you predict will take office in 2025.
