Vermonters have the opportunity to make history—again—on November 8th, 2022

Dear Windham-6 voters,

On Tuesday, November 8th you will elect your next State Representative. I am proud to be the Democratic nominee.

Whether you vote at the Community Club in my hometown of Halifax, the Municipal Center in Whitingham, or the Old School in Wilmington, I am asking for your vote that day.

What do you want from your next State Rep? This is the question I’ve asked at hundreds of homes where I’ve been knocking on doors. Voters have made me aware of issues that I’d like to work on in Montpelier.

But voters are not the only ones I’m consulting with. Our Windham-6 representative will be sworn to uphold the Vermont Constitution and act as a “guardian of the people.”

Therefore, I’ve been re-reading the Constitution and I encourage voters to do the same. Here’s a copy.

Declaration of Rights of the Inhabitants of Vermont — with proposed amendments.

The Republic of Vermont’s Constitution made history when it was adopted on July 8, 1777. Its Declaration of Rights guaranteed certain personal freedoms 12 years before the U.S. Bill of Rights. It remains the bedrock of our state Constitution today.

Vermonters have the opportunity to make history again on November 8th, 2022. Proposal 2 and Proposal 5 would amend our Declaration of Rights on two topics on which we have evolved since 1777.

Proposal 2 would ban all slavery in all forms, including indentured servitude. Proposal 5 would protect the individual’s right to reproductive autonomy. The proposed changes are printed here in Articles 1 and 22 of the Declaration of Rights.

I encourage voters to evaluate these proposals in this broad Constitutional context. I will be voting “Yes” on both, and “Yes” to legislative candidates who will write and vote for the specific laws we need to protect these freedoms and provide reasonable limits.

Thank you for reading. Please vote November 8th!

Sincerely,

Tristan Roberts
